About Ruben Aira Jr

Born in Havana, Cuba, Ruben Aira Jr. immigrated to the United States as a child,

eventually settling in Maryland. From an early age, Ruben showed a passion for

art, inspired by trips to the Smithsonian and exposure to masterworks by

legendary artists. As a young man, he traveled extensively, backpacking through

Europe and hitchhiking across the U.S., before finding his home in Hawaii in

1998.

Deeply influenced by the sea, flora, and fauna of Oahu’s North Shore, Ruben

developed a unique work style. He began carving art from discarded surfboards,

transforming them into intricate, visionary pieces. This innovative approach

earned him recognition, including collaborations to design trophies for the

World Surf League’s Hawaiian Pro and Vans Triple Crown championships to a

features spot at Bill Wyland Galleries.

In 2015, Ruben committed to art full-time, expanding his repertoire to include

multimedia sculptures and paintings that depict themes of beauty, serenity,

and empowerment. His works, often feature ethereal feminine figures set

against oceanic, forest, or cosmic backdrops, reflecting his deep connection to

his environment and heritage. Today, Ruben's art is featured in galleries across

Hawaii, and he continues to support his community through charitable

exhibitions and auctions.

With a passion for innovation and storytelling, Ruben also shares his techniques

through a masterclass series, ensuring his craft inspires future generations.
